What is a GM diet?

GM Diet (General Motors Diet) is a diet in which you take fewer calories than your body needs to lose weight. This diet is divided into seven days of strict plan. You will not eat everything in a 7 days GM diet plan, just foods that are low in calories. 

A 7 days GM diet plan is specifically designed for those who want to lose weight quickly. The 7 days GM diet plan is more challenging than a balanced diet. In a balanced diet, you can eat as many nutrients as you want except fat in a required amount. But in the GM diet plan, you must follow a strict diet that includes food with fewer calories. GM diet plan contains vegetables and fruits with a high water content that promote weight loss and are suitable for your body.

The GM Diet Plan focuses on ensuring the consumption of complex carbs and low-calorie foods. This, combined with increased water intake, can result in significant weight loss in a week.

GM Diet Plan Chart - Day 1

  • All fruits – except bananas

  • Recommended fruits are watermelon and muskmelon

  • 8 to 12 glasses of water.

On the very first day of the 7 days GM diet plan, you can consume as many fruits as you want, and there are no specific rules on the quantity and time one should eat them. However, it is best to include watermelons and muskmelons since they contain high amounts of fiber. You can also have apples, oranges, and papaya in your diet.

The most important part of the diet is consuming 8 to 12 glasses of water and avoiding starving at any point of the day. If you’re hungry, feel free to eat some fruits and satisfy your hunger. The high water intake will also flush out the toxins from the body and prepare it for the rest of the diet. These fiber-rich and low-fat foods reduce an individual’s calorie intake by keeping the individual full for longer. 

On day one, avoid any kind of vegetables and consume fruits. Among fruits, it is ideal to stay away from bananas. You can try the following day 1 GM diet plan:

8:00 AM - 1 medium apple, a few plums, or an orange.

10:30 AM - ½ bowl of sliced muskmelon.

12:30 PM - 1 bowl of watermelon.

4:00 PM - 1 large orange.

6:30 PM - 1 cup of muskmelon and pomegranate salad.

8:30 PM - ½ cup of watermelon.

GM Diet Plan Chart - Day 2

  • Large boiled potato

  • Cooked or uncooked vegetables of your choice without oil

  • 8 to 12 glasses of water.

The second day of the GM Diet involves eating vegetables. As per the plan, you must stay away from fruits altogether on day 2.

The veggies can be consumed cooked or raw, as per your preference. However, make sure that there is no oil involved in their preparation. Olive oil or butter can be used sparingly for flavor if required.

Vegetables contain all the nutrients that you need to sustain the body. You get the necessary carbs from potatoes and protein from peas, and carrots and beans are rich in fiber and all essential vitamins. If you add potatoes, avoid deep-fried or chips.

After a fairly low-carb day one, the day 2 diet will help restore the carbohydrate content in your body and provide enough energy to keep the diet going. You can try the following day 2 GM diet plan:

8:00 AM - 1 cup of boiled potatoes.

10:30 AM - ½ bowl of cucumber.

12:30 PM - 1 cup of lettuce, spinach, cucumber, and capsicum.

4:00 PM - ½ cup sliced carrots and a glass of lemon juice with a pinch of salt.

6:30 PM - 1 cup boiled broccoli and green peas.

8:30 PM - 1 cucumber.

GM Diet Plan Chart - Day 3

  • All fruits – except bananas

  • Cooked or uncooked vegetables (except potatoes) of your choice without oil

  • 8 to 12 glasses of water.

On the third day of the 7 days GM diet plan, one must eat a combination of fruits and vegetables. These foods can be the same as those consumed in the first two days, but avoid potatoes and bananas. You need to drink 8 to 12 glasses of water to flush out all toxins from the body. You can try the following day 3 GM diet plan:

8:00 AM - ½ bowl of muskmelon.

10:30 AM - 1 cup of pineapple or pear.

12:30 PM - 1 cup of lettuce, spinach, cucumber, and capsicum.

4:00 PM - ½ cup sliced carrots and a glass of lemon juice with a pinch of salt.

6:30 PM - 1 cup of boiled broccoli and green peas.

8:30 PM - 1 cucumber.

GM Diet Plan Chart -  Day 4

  • 8 to 10 bananas

  • 3 to 4 glasses of milk

  • 8 to 12 glasses of water.

On the fourth day, one must consume eight bananas. Bananas are rich in pectin and aid in digestion. Along with other nutrients, bananas are also high in potassium and low in salt and provide instant energy.

In addition, one should drink a big glass of milk each at breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Milk is also a great source of potassium and calcium. The milk is fortified with Vitamin D and helps strengthen bones.

On Day 4, one must avoid eating fruits other than bananas. However, you can substitute bananas and milk with fig and soy milk. You can try the following day 4 GM diet plan:

8:00 AM - 2 bananas.

10:30 AM - 1 banana.

12:30 PM - Milkshake (2 bananas + 1 glass of milk + a dash of cocoa powder).

4:00 PM - 2 bananas.

6:30 PM - 1 banana + 1 glass of milk.

8:30 PM - 1 glass of milk.

GM Diet Plan Chart - Day 5

  • 6 tomatoes

  • One cup of brown rice

  • 12 to 15 glasses of water.

Vegetarians can eat brown rice on day 5 of the 7 days GM diet plan, while non-vegetarians can consume a lean protein source like chicken breast (500 g of baked or lightly fried skinless chicken) or fish. In addition to that, one must also eat six large tomatoes.

You can combat the high amounts of uric acid your body will produce by drinking up to 15 glasses of water daily.

Brown rice is rich in fiber and helps with digestion. Chicken and fish are excellent lean protein sources. Additionally, fish also has omega-3 fatty acids, and the high fiber in tomatoes means they aid digestion too. You can try the following day 5 GM diet plan:

9:00 AM - 3 tomatoes.

12:30 PM - ½ cup of brown rice + Sautéed assorted veggies.

4:00 PM - 2 tomatoes.

6:30 PM - 1 bowl of brown rice + 1 tomato + ½ cup of sautéed veggies.

GM Diet Plan Chart - Day 6

  • One cup of brown rice

  • Cooked or uncooked vegetables (except potatoes) of your choice without oil

  • 8 to 12 glasses of water.

The sixth day also follows a pattern similar to the previous day, adding cooked or uncooked vegetables. One must ensure that the vegetables are boiled and not fried, and salads should not have any heavy dressing. Like the previous day, vegetarians can opt for a cup of brown rice, while non-vegetarians can include a lean protein source like fish or chicken breast.

Non-vegetarians can consume up to 500 g of skinless chicken and vegetables apart from tomatoes and potatoes. Vegetables on day 6 also provide the required fiber for the body. Ideally, one must avoid all fruits, along with potatoes and sweet potatoes. You can try the following day 6 GM diet plan:

9:00 AM - 1 glass of carrot juice.

12:30 PM - ½ cup of brown rice + ½ cup of veggies.

4:00 PM - 1 cup of cucumber slices.

6:30 PM - ½ bowl of brown rice + ½ cup of veggie, chicken/cottage cheese.

GM Diet Plan Chart - Day 7

  • One cup of brown rice

  • Any vegetables

  • All fruit juices.

On the last day of the 7 days GM diet plan, one would eat a cup of brown rice, an assortment of vegetables, and fruit juice. One can eat a cup of brown rice and a bowl of boiled vegetables for lunch. As for hydration, drink sugarless fruit juice after every meal or snack to complement the nutrient-rich vegetables. As with the previous 6 days, one must also avoid certain foods on the seventh day. It is advisable to avoid vegetables like potatoes and sweet potatoes, whereas fruits like bananas, cherries, mango, and pear. 

The rice and vegetables will provide the body with some much-needed energy to keep the body functioning efficiently, and the fruit juices will help flush out the toxins from the system. You can try the following day 7 GM diet plan:

9:00 AM - 1 glass of orange/apple juice.

12:30 PM - ½ cup of brown rice + ½ cup of sautéed veggies.

4:00 PM - 1 cup of watermelon/few assorted berries.

6:30 PM - 1 bowl of GM diet plan soup made of cabbage, tomatoes, onions, green peppers, and celery.

Benefits of GM Diet Plan

  • GM diet plan is beneficial in achieving weight loss goals. You can consume that foods rich in vitamins and minerals, whereas high-calorie foods are avoided here. You can lose up to 7 kg with a strict seven-day diet plan. 

  • This diet will help you remove any toxic or impure material from your body if present. 

  • GM diet plays a vital role in digestion. As the food in this diet is abundant in water, you know that water is mandatory for good digestion.

The GM Diet plan has several side effects that need to be considered before one starts to follow the diet.

  • Although the GM diet plan is high in fiber, it is low in protein, carbs, and fats. Because of this, your body may not get the essential nutrients.

  • The GM Diet can lead to a metabolic slowdown. While your weight loss process may not be affected initially, this would eventually make it difficult to maintain your body weight.

  • The body uses all the fluids in the diet for metabolism. The diet could, therefore, lead you to feel dehydrated.

  • The other possible side effects of the GM Diet include weakness, headaches, and hunger pangs.

  • GM diet plan is a bit difficult to add this diet to our daily routine.

Take-Home Points

  • GM diet will be possible to follow if you aim to lose belly fat or the overall weight, but when your lifestyle doesn't permit it, or you know that you cannot take it, there is no need to do this diet.

  • It is not suitable for pregnant women, growing children, or older people. After seven days of sticking to this diet, you should stop continuing it as it will not suit your health. 

  • After following this GM diet, you could feel tired and weak. That’s why you should stop this diet just after seven days. 

  • It is helpful for those individuals who want some discipline in life and those who can’t control their eating habits.
